United World Colleges Scholarship Program is a full scholarship program for grade 11 students to gain an International Baccalaureate degree at o­ne of the United World Colleges in the world. Scholarships include tuition, room and board for two years of study at the school. The United World Colleges are a group of twelve related International Schools, with locations throughout the world including the Pearson College of the Pacific in Victoria, Canada. Students from 16-19 years of age come from all corners of the globe to live and study together, and to learn about each other in an environment that fosters peace, cooperation, and personal challenge. UWC students are chosen o­n merit, regardless of race, creed, color, background or financial ability and the majority are awarded scholarships.

In addition to having a good academic standing and a good level of fluency in English, successful applicants should also:

  • Have a genuine enthusiasm for the aims of the Colleges and for the idea of creating understanding between peoples of widely differing cultures.
  • Have an openness of mind and approach new and unfamiliar experiences with enthusiasm, balance and good humour.
  • Be able to accept and enjoy customs and attitudes which are vastly different from their own.
  • Care for the environment and surrounding people and be willing to help others.
  • Have an active and proven interest in the wide world in which we live, manifesting in such interests as writing, painting, ecological studies, economics, or exploration.

The International Fellowship Program provides 20 awards annually for graduate-level (MA or Ph.D) study in any field of study at any accredited university in the world that is consistent with the goals and interests of the Ford Foundation, which funds the program. Candidates must be Vietnamese and either live and work in a rural area or in Hai Phong, Hue or Da Nag, or be women living and working in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city, or be members of an ethnic minority group. The Women's Leadership Scholarship provides full funding for women grassroots leaders, organizers and activists from the Global South and/or from indigenous groups to pursue non-doctoral level graduate education. Topics of study include human rights, sustainable development, and public health. Candidates must be accepted in a graduate program, must have at least three years of work experience dealing with human rights concerns and other social, educational, environmental, health or economic conditions that negatively affect their communities, and must demonstrate financial need. The Asian Development Bank/Government of Japan Scholarship Program is open to citizens of developing member countries of the Bank who have been admitted to o­ne of the specified study programs in the participating academic institutions. A list of the institutions, which are in the Philippines, Thailand, the US (Hawaii), India, Japan, Pakistan, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and Hong Kong, can be found at http://www.adb.org/Documents/Program/default.asp.

The Program especially welcomes women applicants and individuals who have limited financial access to higher studies. Upon completion of the study, you are expected to return to your home country. Candidates should be physically fit.
The scholarship covers full tuition fees, an allowance for books and instructional materials, a monthly subsistence, medical insurance and travel expenses. For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be made to assist in field work and thesis preparation. In special circumstances computer literacy, preparatory language and other similar courses may be covered under the scholarship.

Essay-based Awards

The A. Bannister Scholarship is awarded annually by www.surrey-lawyers.com to the student who submits a scholarship essay o­n the designated topic. The award is US$1,200.
Students who will be attending a college or university in the Arts, Business, Law, or Pre-Law are considered eligible. The topic for 2007 is:

1. If you could get into any college or university in North American, which school would you choose and why?

2. In your opinion, which college or university offers the best law program and why?

The Adellson Group awards up to $5000 to the winner(s) of an essay contest. Students between the ages of 16 and 25 attending or admitted to an accredited college or university are eligible. The essay questions for 2007 are:

1. Assume that you have recently finished your first year as mayor of your city. At the end of the year there is $1 Million dollars left in the budget. You must spend this money within your community. What would you spend it o­n and why?

2. Assume that your neighborhood has recently seen a drastic increase in crime. Further assume that you have 100 individual home owners and no commercial property located in your neighborhood. Outline a three step plan to help reduce the crime rate in your area.

The Dale E. Fridell Memorial Scholarships of US$1,000 are open to anyone aspiring to attend a university, college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary education program, including international students. The Elder and Leemaur Publishers "Challenge the Experts" Scholarships available to current undergraduate students in any field of study and any student in either junior or senior high school. Applicants must write an essay of 500 words max. o­n o­ne of the following topics:

Topic #1: Many experts believe that an academically competitive atmosphere is helpful to you as a student. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.

Topic #2: Many experts believe that the world will continue to get more riddled with war and violence over the course of the next ten years. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.

Topic #3: Many experts believe an influx of foreign-born workers will be an effective solution to a future labor shortage, when "baby boomers" reach the age of retirement. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.

The Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship is open to anyone attending a university, college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary education program in the 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 academic year. Eligible students may not have already been receiving or awarded a full-tuition scholarship from another source. (This means that you can not apply if you already have 100% of your school paid for). Applicants must write an essay of fewer than 750 words o­n how the education of your generation is better or worse than the education of your parent's generation. The Leonardo da Vinci Scholarship is open to any student between the ages of 16 and 25 currently attending either high school or a post secondary institution. The award of US$1,500 may be used for any type of costs associated with attending school. Applicants must answer the following question in at least 500 words: Of the countless accomplishments that Leonardo Da Vinci has made in the fields of art, science, mathematics, etc.., what do you believe is his most significant accomplishment? (Please be sure to outline in detail WHY you believe this is his greatest achievement.) The Olive W. Garvey Fellowship is available to undergraduate and graduate students under the age of 35. You must compose an essay between 1,500 and 3,000 words addressing the topic: "Is foreign aid the solution to global poverty?"
