The British Embassy in Hanoi and the British Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City issue visas for Vietnamese students wishing to study in the U.K. Visa applicants will be required to fill out the application form, present financial and academic documentation and possibly attend an interview at the Embassy or Consulate. Additional information about the British Embassy and Consulate such as addresses and opening hours can be found at www.britishembassy.gov.uk/vietnam. As part of the application process, you will need to submit to the Embassy or Consulate the following: - Completed application form VAF-1. This form can be downloaded from the website www.ukvisas.gov.uk or picked up at the British Consulate or Embassy.
- Valid passport
- Passport-sized (45mm x 35mm) color photograph of yourself
- Financial documentation. You will need to show that you have enough money to pay for tuition and living costs for at least 2 years (or the amount of time you will be in the U.K. if it is less than two years). Acceptable proof of finances includes bank statements, pay slips and evidence of savings belonging to you (if you are supporting your own study) or your sponsor. Academic documentation. You should also take the acceptance letter and accommodation contracts (if available) from the institution where you will study, IELTS scores and transcripts from your most recent study in Vietnam.
- Visa application fee of approximately $165 US
Notes about documents: If you are in doubt about whether a document is necessary or useful, bring it; it is better to have too much rather than too little supporting documentation. Bring the original documents where possible plus an English translation. After your application is reviewed a personal interview may be requested. If so, the Consulate or Embassy will make every effort to schedule the interview within 10 days of receiving your application. In reviewing your application, visa officers will consider whether: - You have sufficient financial resources. The documents you take to the interview are essential in proving your financial ability. If anyone other than your parents is financing your study, you need to explain your special relationship with this person, justifying a commitment of thousands of dollars for your education. If your parents’ or sponsor’s income is from a variety of sources, have them list and document each source of income.
- You intend to return to Vietnam after your study. When you have completed your studies it is expected that you will return to Vietnam. You must demonstrate that you have sufficient economic, family and social ties that will motivate you to return home. If you have evidence of a job or continuing studies to return to in Vietnam, you can include it in your application. Otherwise, it is a good idea to present a career plan that includes your knowledge of the local employment opportunities when you return.
Extending your visa All postgraduate students and some undergraduate students are allowed to extend their visa up to 12 months to stay in the UK. This extension time provides students with a chance to gain valuable work experience or travel in the UK, which they might not have had time to do during their studies.
