Tuition and fees.

International students studying in private high schools can expect to pay tuition and fees from US$10,200 to US$2,800 annually. The average annual cost for tuition and fees for an international undergraduate student ranges from US$11,100 to US$14,500, while at the graduate level, tuition and fees range from US$15,300 to US$17,000 annually.

In calculating your expenses, keep in mind that on-campus residence/dormitory accommodation comes furnished and may include the cost of meals, whereas an off-campus apartment will not include furniture, the cost of utilities or meals (although cooking at home is generally less expensive than eating in campus dining halls). Homestays include a furnished room and meals with the host family.

  • Average cost of a room in a hostel: US$9 - US$17 per night.

  • Average cost of homestay accommodation: US$340 – US$690 monthly, plus initial placement fee of up to US$170.

  • Average cost of shared off-campus apartment or house: US$210 - US$600 monthly.

  • Average cost of off-campus suite or apartment: US$340 - US$1,300 monthly.

Living costs

on average, international students spend about US$8,000 to US$10,000 a year on accommodation, food and personal expenses. Of course this estimate varies according to where the student lives and studies and his or her personal lifestyle.

Here are some typical prices to give you an idea of costs in Canada:

  • Bus Fare one Way (local) US$1.7 - US$2.55
  • Average Restaurant Meal US$8.5 - US$21.24 per person
  • Movie US$7.22 - US$10.20
  • Letter within Canada US$0.44

Working while studying

Some students hope to find part-time work in order to make extra spending money while studying. While international students on study permits in Canada are generally not allowed to work, there are exceptions. Full-time students at the post-secondary level are allowed to work provided the work is on the campus where they are registered.
