WHAT IS TOEFL? The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. Almost all U.S. institutions require that international applicants whose native language is not English take the TOEFL before they are considered for admission, and it is widely accepted as a prerequisite examination for non-native English speakers by institutions throughout the world. Each institution decides what minimum TOEFL score is acceptable. In general, colleges consider a total score of 250 or above to be excellent and a score below 97 as inadequate. Average scores range between 173 and 250 for undergraduate applicants. A new, Internet-based version of the TOEFL exam (TOEFL iBT) is currently available. . HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR THE TOEFL EXAM? Apollo’s TOEFL (iBT) Preparation Course will train you in the testing skills required to maximize your potential on the TOEFL (iBT) exam. We offer two levels of study: Level 1 is for students at the Intermediate level and Level 2 is for students at or above the High Intermediate level. Each course comprises 60 hours of study. REGISTRATION Before registering, students must take the Apollo Placement Test which includes a writing component (timed essay) and a spoken interview. Please telephone the Apollo centre closest to you to book a Placement Test. Students need to register at least a week in advance in order to secure a place in the course.
